The premise and science of this book is all really interesting, and I like the historical setting in the Chinese Cultural Revolution. It is really mainstream though.
I often found myself asking, "why are these the people being centered?" as almost all of the characters in the book have comfortable lives and are involved in either science, the military, or the police. I understand that if the events of the book actually happened in this world then these would be the people who would know about it first, but the whole book felt very complacent about the systems and structures of our world. I would rather read something that centers people who are marginalized by society, that is pointing out our world's problems and imagining a better one so that we can go about actualizing it.
There is a short scene where a group of people who are just meeting each other are talking about the colonization of a specific indigenous group in the Americas. Someone says the world is better off because of colonization (and gives their reasoning). Two people disagree. Those two people are kicked out of the group, and the subject is never mentioned again.
If you like more mainstream sci-fi, especially Ender's Game, you will probably like this. There were a number of interesting ideas being described, and the first two-thirds of the book were really captivating for me. Just don't go in expecting any big critique of human society or capitalism or anything.
